The Summer is an even more special season and there are all types of events, religious celebrations, typical festivities, music shows and festivals and so on…
Here are a couple of events we suggest you should be part of upon your 2015 summer trip to Portugal.
Events in the north
Festivities of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
It is a catholic event, takin place in the beautiful city of Lamego between the 21st August until the 9th of September. The highlight of the festivities is the procession as it is the only one the world where the virgin is pulled by animals, (yoked oxen).
A lovely suggestion for accomodation is the charming Vintage House Douro , with views over the Douro River!
Pilgrimage of Sra D`Agonia
Between the 20 and the 23rd of August in the fishing village of Viana do Castelo, take place the pilgrimage of Sra d´Agonia where there are parades with ladies dressed in the typical vests of Viana do Castelo, covered with the typical jewels, and the party environment “over crosses” the religious flair of the party and there are concerts, fireworks, parades and many other typical animations. This party honours the virgin of Agony, the protector of the fisherman.
Meo Marés Vivas
On the 17th , 18th and 19th of July, in Vila Nova de Gaia the opposite rival riverside city to Oporto, hosts the Mares Vivas Festival, who will bring this year band names including Lenny Kravitz, Jamie Cullum and John Legend. What else would be a great scenery to a summer music festival than the river Douro?
Our stay suggestion is in the charming 1872 River House in Porto facing the River view, but on a quitter perspective 😉
Festa dos tabuleiros “tray festival”
It is a popular fest taking place in Tomar every four years in July. This festival is mainly referred to a young ladys parade dressed in typical vests carrying very high flowers trays on their heads. This party also includes the blessing of the trays, intensive street decorations, the flower throwing over the parade as well as kilts over the windows.
Events in Lisbon
Our suggestion for a central stay in Lisbon, with a cosy and intimate atmosphere is the charming Browns Boutique Hotel and Apartments

It`s a sort of Portuguese Glastonbury taking place at Algés riverbank on the 9th, 10th and 114th of July, with world famous musicians such as Ben Harper, Muse, The prodigy and Sam Smith among others.
Events in the south
This is a very typical, small and authentic party. The harbour of the small village of Arrifana in the southwest coast of Portugal, is the host and the fisherman’s offer the fish for free, usually the typical sardine. The attendants are invited to buy a €10 can which they can refill as many times as they would like of beer or red wine, and there concerts and typical music until late night. Tip: arrive as early as possible as the drink is usually finished quite early, and bring your one metal grids to grill the fish and you will dinner much quicker.
A very good alternative for accommodation in the area is Casas do Moinho, in Odeceixe, about 20km , where everything is much more quiet and the beaches would be less crowded than the ones in Zambujeira.
On the first week of August, from 1st till the 9th, Redondo, a white washed inland village of Alentejo is hosting this year an event that happens only once every two years.
It is a party where the local community dress about 30 streets with strong colours paper flowers and other decorations turning this small village with the aim of turning the village more beautiful. This is a party that dates back from the XIX century.
The best recommendation is Agua de Alte, a timeless elegance manor house about 3 km from the city centre.
The shower of 29th of August
It is an old but unclear tradition in the Lagos district in Algarve, where people tend to go to the beach at night and dive into the sea at midnight. Usually there are party animations and music and the most famous beaches are “meai-praia”, “solaria” “vau”.
Traditions vary from being a day where the evil was around at day time so you could shower at night some other says it is referred to the end of the summer as a celebration. Whichever are its roots, locals keep the tradition alive!
An accommodation suggestion to the eastern part of the Algarve is the renovated Vila Monte Farm House in Moncarrapacho, where you can indulge a farm alike hotel within a soberb comfort.
Be part of this typical events of the summer of 2015 in Portugal, and behave like a Portuguese!
