Cycling in Southwest Coast of Portugal

Cycling in Southwest Coast of Portugal is wonderful!

The Portuguese Southwestern coast is excellent for cycling (and for everything, basically!). We have designed a trail which will take you through breathtaking countryside, endless beaches and sleepy villages where houses are white and people wear black to protect themselves from the Summer heat. Away from all stress and our neurotic city lives, these people lead peaceful existences and will be delighted to welcome you in their local cafés, where they all meet at the end of the day for a beer and some chit-chat.

In Cercal, your first lodging will be the sophisticated Herdade da Matinha, the perfect spot for a dolce far niente state of mind. Day dreaming under a cork tree, lingering by the swimming pool, horseback riding or simply walking in the estate’s fields, this is a guesthouse with lots to offer! Porto Covo is next, a lovely fishing village on top of dramatic cliffs which protect its numerous crescent shaped beaches just below. Vila Nova de Milfontes follows. This is a seaside resort and a surfing place par excellence (as most beaches in Portugal’s Southwest). You will fall in love with its lovely little castle and probably also with Oasis, a restaurant with superb views over the river, which has been serving typical Alentejo flavours for over 2 decades. Odeceixe is not far either: a secluded village with an amazing beach, where you will feel the strength of nature’s elements around you as the coastline is incredibly wild, windy and beautiful. If not in the Summer season, trust us, you will be alone in this beach! There is also a lovely market to explore the region’s best and freshest produce. With so much peace, you will sleep as sound as a baby at original Casas do Moinho guesthouse. From here to the South lies the Algarve: Aljezur and its castle, Bordeira and its unique Sitio do Rio restaurant, (as comfortable and delicious as it was 20 years ago!), the Pizza-Pazza or L-Colesterol restaurants at recently renovated Aldeia de Pedralva (a village that was entirely renovated for tourism purposes) …. and another perfect hideaway where you will be welcomed as a friend: the Casa Fajara, in Carrapateira.
