In 2011, the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism was approved by the United Nations General Assembly. This code comprises a set of principles and measures aimed at the development of sustainable and responsible tourism.
This code aims to reconcile not only environmental concerns but also economic and social development, establishing a balance between public and private actors, enshrining individual rights to tourism and freedom to travel as tourists.
“Tourism represents a vital force for peace and a factor of friendship and understanding among the peoples of the world.” This requires respect for the diversity of moral, religious, sexual or philosophical beliefs, as well as for other cultures, peoples or populations.
