Railway lines in the Douro region.
Hiking on the old Tua railway lines
In the Douro region, steam trains used to run on one of the most beautiful railway-lines in the country. This line crossed the Douro vineyards and terraces, alongside the Douro River and its tributaries. The years passed and environmental concern grew so the line was shut down. It now provides the most beautiful walks in the region, on the sleepers this historical train once ran over. But don’t be discouraged. The Portuguese railway company usually opens this route on Saturdays between July and October, allowing the more inspired to take a journey into the past.
