MONTE SARAZ

“A peaceful retreat with views over the delightful town of Monsaraz”

ONCE UPON A TIME…

Monte Saraz is a nineteenth-century “monte” (a typical Alentejo farming estate) which in olden times operated as an olive oil press. It underwent two extensive renovations, but it has still kept its old features which, alongside the elegance of its traditional architecture, underlines the real comfort of this place. The two double rooms are located in Casa do Lagar, the main house on this cosy estate. If you are travelling with your family or if you prefer more independence, you have four small, independent houses to choose from. These are in different sizes and are furnished and decorated by the owner, Marc Lammerink, as a result of the experience he has gained from his travels around the world.

The swimming pool at this cosy retreat is framed by the arches of the former oil press, giving it unique characteristics and making it very distinguished. Surrounded by a thousand-year-old olive grove, among vegetable gardens and orchards, valleys and fields, the area around this retreat is a setting worthy of paradise.

The delightful medieval town of Monsaraz is just a few kilometres away and offers you the possibility of getting to know one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Portugal. This, along with the grandeur of its historical legacy, provides traditional Alentejo gastronomy that is not to be missed.

A traveller by profession and with experience in Africa, Asia and Latin America, he has been in contact with Portugal for many years now. Mastering this language (and another five) Marc Lammerink, Dutch by birth, has always been interested in having a stronger connection to Portugal, which he has now accomplished with his rural tourism establishment. He has always been enchanted by the Alentejo region, ever since a camping trip in Monsaraz in 1976. It was in 2003 that he came across Monte Saraz and saw in this place the possibility to make his dream come true, which became a reality since 2004.
