As Portugal is a Catholic country, the popular saints festivals are a tradition during the hot summer months throughout the country.
Tribute is paid particularly to the classic saints, Saint Anthony in Lisbon, Saint John in Porto and Saint Peter, the patron saint of everything and everyone, as he is “the guardian” of the gates of Heaven and the one who most believers ask for help (of any kind).
The atmosphere at these celebrations in villages or towns is one of sheer fun. With traditional Portuguese music and dancing on the streets, these celebrations are accompanied by grilled sardines and sweet basil with a variety of popular rhymes. In Lisbon and Porto, these celebrations usually take place downtown and in the historical centres, but there are festivities all over these cities.
