The area around the Alqueva and Monsaraz has great ornithological richness that are perfect for birdwatching. The low density of its population, the huge amount of water available in the dam, the various lakes and reservoirs around the area and the variety of habitats, make it home to an astonishing diversity of species. Besides the numerous resident species, many others congregate in this area to breed or to get away from the cold winters in Europe.

Boat Rides on the Alqueva

Alqueva Boat Ride.

The Alqueva dam is the largest artificial lake in Europe. The construction of this dam caused the little village of Luz to be submersed. It was later rebuilt in another place. On a relaxed boat ride, you will have the chance to get to know this stunning lake and also to visit the modern Aldeia da Luz, which has kept the architecture and details of the old village, now submersed.
