Vila Real de Santo António
Even though it has “Vila” in the name, Vila Real de Santo António is a city that was originally built in 1774 by Marquês de Pombal. Its main purpose was to regulate the commerce on this particular border line and to expand the fishing industry. Its surroundings are composed by different types of environments: On the south, the beach, on the north, the Natural Park of Sapal de Castro Marim and on the west the famous pine tree forest of the area. In just a few minutes, it’s possible to cross the borderline from Vila Real de Santo António into Spain.
