The must visit cycling paths in Portugal

In the last few years, Portugal has been investing a lot in cycling paths.

Currently there is an offer of approximately 276 specific lanes, in a total of 1.661.760 km from Viana do Castelo (in the North) to Tavira (in the South). This means that all Portuguese, and all people visiting us, can now circulate in a healthy, non-polluting way. These lanes have been safely built and protect cyclists from our sometimes chaotic city traffic. They cover most of the Portuguese territory and will surely fit every taste and level of fitness.

If your preference goes to easy cycling, we would suggest the interior of the Alentejo as it is mostly flat and very scenic. A good example would be the Évora, Serpa or Arraiolos routes, as they combine sport, history, beautiful plains and excellent gastronomy. Check-out our Inland Alentejo Bike & Wine Tour.

If you like the coast, fishing villages and old-fashioned seaside resorts, cross the river from Porto and try the Vila Nova de Gaia route. You may go as far as Granja with its fin-de-siécle villas. If you prefer the mountains, check the trail in Serra da Lousã, where, apart from hard cycling, you will be visiting beautifully preserved rustic villages (where you can actually stay).

In Lisbon, besides the city paths bordering the river, which go as far as Cascais (22 km), you can also take the boat, cross the river and initiate your adventure along the beautiful Costa da Caparica beaches.

Further South, in the Algarve, the Vila Real de Santo António route, is a good way of mixing various aspects of the region, as it crosses villages, countryside, beaches and the Ria Formosa (a bird sanctuary).

Finally, if you feel like exploring the country in depth and have a “real” bicycle experience join us in one of our tours and marvel at the beautiful and diverse Portuguese landscape. For further information, check the site ciclovia (unfortunately only in Portuguese).
