"An authentic and genuine experience in a historical house and in a schist village"

Once Upon a Time...

It is in Ferraria de São João, a small village south of the Lousã mountain, that Casa do Zé Sapateiro can be found. This cosy house was completely rebuilt keeping the original architecture of the house. Its 6 cosy double bedrooms and suite, with traditional details and extremely comfortable, are a cosy nook in the middle of a schist village and can accommodate up to 16 people.

Ferraria de São João is a historical village built in schist that is part of a charming group of schist villages. Authentic locations, whose architecture, way of life, people and traditions will take you back in time and above all stop you from watching the clock. In this village you can still take part in activities that some of its 40 inhabitants still continue to perform.

The proposals in this quaint, green setting are many, from hiking paths and bike trails to the most varied nature activities in the Lousã mountain range, not forgetting the clear, refreshing water of the river beaches on warmer days.

The suggestion is to let yourself be carried away by the scenario and a “modus vivendi” of other times and engage with the region while enjoying the most typical and authentic accommodation where its welcoming is one of its strong points.

Enamoured by the village and the charms of these historical places, São and Paulo saw the opportunity of creating a rural tourism project, in Casa do Zé Sapateiro, which is perfectly framed by its surroundings, where tradition is inspired with every breath.

In 2009, Casa do Zé Sapateiro opened up its doors as a rural tourism hotel with its hosts Paulo and São. Some have the gift of knowing how to be a host, these are gifts people are born with! Their passion for the countryside brought São and Paulo to the village.

There are old houses that seem to have been made for you; this is what they felt. But they needed to break some other ties: the house in Casal de São Simão where they had spent many good weekends was left in good hands and their professional life in Marinha Grande became increasingly distant. With an explosive smile stamped on their faces, they tell us: “It was worth it!”
