A new approach to travel in Portugal, the sustainable way

By We Love Small Hotels

As we travel, we come closer to the unique natural habitat and to many cultures that are preserved by its people. Usually, looking at our planet we tend to think about how strong the whole ecosystem is, but the fact is that our global home needs us. Every day is a reminder of how important it’s to preserve the resources we have and the biodiversity.

There's a sustainable way to travel in Portugal.

Many destinations are putting efforts to create a strategy to impact less and setting priorities like fighting pollution, preserving natural habitats, and empowering local communities. In 2020, Lisbon was the EU Commission’s Green Capital. In Portugal there are many other destinations that were able to keep its authenticity and are going towards a green path. Azores Islands, the west region in the centre, Sintra or Lagos in Algarve are some examples of destinations in Portugal that are working to become a more sustainable destination.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, this feeling that is urgent to take care of our planet has been growing. Take time to explore our website and you will find unique hotels that value nature and have a strong social responsibility position, like Craveiral Farmhouse that uses natural ingredients from the vegetable garden, local producers in its restaurant and that also used Portuguese furniture in its decoration; Pedras Salgadas Spa and Nature Park, a retreat for nature lovers, where you can stay in an eco-lodges or a treehouse, or Areias do Seixo that went biological all the way and even brought nature inside its facilities, just to name a few examples. Discover this three sustainable hotels in the Eco-Tour of Portugal.

Another special project worth mentioning is Rota Vicentina. This route through the Alentejo west coast brings both authenticity and uniqueness to Portugal’s rural destination. It’s an immersive experience with traditions, culture and nature all around that support local communities, involves them in the project and gives a strong awareness to the preservation of natural habitats. A project that is focused totally on sustainable tourism.

Last, but not least, the Azores Islands. The beautiful archipelago is a dazzling destination that you should visit at least once in your life. The Azores are the first archipelago in the world to have an international certification as a sustainable destination. Watch how they started this green journey here. Discover the best of Azores in the Tour Vines, Volcanoes and Whales.

Aside from all these projects, we also joined QUERCUS and whenever a tour is sold, a tree in your name is planted, in Portugal. We are connected through this common home and we are responsible to preserve our HOME for future generations, so let us travel in a better and more sustainable way.

The passion for authenticity and the uniqueness of Portugal marks our tours. It is present in the people, activities, and small boutique hotels. We not only guarantee a unique and immersive experience with traditions and cultures, but we support local communities. We believe that having social responsibility is our duty.
