Volcanic crater lakes, natural hot springs, dramatic coastal viewpoints, lush hiking trails and one of the most authentic food scenes in Portugal all fit into an island that can be crossed in less than two hours. The challenge isn't finding beautiful place, it's knowing which ones are actually worth your time, how to connect them into a logical route, and when to visit each one to avoid the crowds.

After exploring São Miguel ourselves over multiple trips, we've designed this itinerary around how we would recommend discovering the island today. Rather than rushing from viewpoint to viewpoint, this guide combines the island's iconic highlights with lesser-known places, scenic drives, local restaurants and boutique hotels that reflect the authentic character of the Azores. Whether you're planning your first Azores vacation, a Portugal road trip that includes the islands, or simply looking for the best São Miguel itinerary, this guide will help you make the most of every day.

Azores Three Day Itinerary

Day 1 | Furnas, Tea Plantations & Hidden Gems

Start your first day in Ponta Delgada before driving east along São Miguel's spectacular north coast. Today's route combines some of the island's most iconic experiences with a few lesser-known places that many visitors drive straight past.

Miradouro da Ladeira da Velha

Skip the busy viewpoints and head instead to one of our favorite hidden overlooks on São Miguel. Just a few minutes from Gorreana Tea Plantation, Miradouro da Ladeira da Velha remains one of the island's lesser-known viewpoints. Perched above the dramatic north coast, it offers sweeping views over green cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean.

Gorreana Tea Plantation

Continue to Gorreana Tea Plantation, Europe's oldest tea plantation still in operation. Walk through the rolling tea fields, visit the historic factory and learn how tea has been produced here for over a century. Before leaving, don't miss the opportunity to taste the plantation's green and black teas while overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Cascata das Lombadas

Now it's time for one of São Miguel's best-kept secrets. Hidden deep within the forest, Cascata das Lombadas is rarely included in traditional itineraries, yet it's one of the island's most rewarding waterfalls. Reaching it requires a short but challenging walk, with sections that can become muddy and slippery after rain. Bring proper hiking shoes and only attempt the trail if you're comfortable walking on uneven terrain.

Furnas Village

Continue towards Furnas, one of the most fascinating volcanic villages in the Azores. Steam rises from the ground, mineral springs bubble beside the road and geothermal activity is part of everyday life. Wander through the village before stopping for lunch. This is the perfect place to try the famous Cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew slowly cooked underground using the island's natural volcanic heat.

Terra Nostra Garden

Spend the afternoon at Terra Nostra Garden, one of Portugal's most beautiful botanical gardens. Beyond its famous thermal pool, you'll find centuries-old trees, winding pathways, exotic plants and quiet corners that invite you to slow down. If you don't mind the iron-rich water turning your swimsuit slightly orange, take a dip in the naturally heated pool

Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo

Before heading back to Ponta Delgada, stop at one of São Miguel's most iconic landscapes. The Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is a small volcanic islet just off the coast, famous for its perfectly circular natural lagoon. During the summer months, you can take a short boat ride from the marina and spend a few hours swimming or relaxing inside this unique volcanic crater. If you're visiting outside the swimming season, or simply prefer to admire it from above, drive up to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Paz. From here, you'll enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views over Vila Franca do Campo, the islet and the south coast of São Miguel.

Caloura

Finish your day in the peaceful village of Caloura, one of our favorite spots on São Miguel's south coast. Known for its crystal-clear natural swimming area and relaxed atmosphere, Caloura is the perfect place to slow down after a day of exploring. Enjoy a swim if the weather allows, or simply have dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants, where fresh fish and local seafood are served overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Herdade do Ananás

After a full day exploring waterfalls, volcanic landscapes and hidden corners of São Miguel, there's no better place to unwind than Herdade do Ananás, one of our Signature Stays in the Azores. One of its most unique experiences is relaxing in the outdoor jacuzzi nestled inside a traditional pineapple greenhouse.

Day 2 | Sete Cidades & São Miguel's Wild West 

Today you'll discover São Miguel's most iconic volcanic landscapes. From dramatic crater lakes and scenic hiking trails to natural hot springs by the Atlantic Ocean, this route explores the island's spectacular west coast at a slower pace, with plenty of time to stop and enjoy the views.

Miradouro da Vigia das Baleias das Feteiras

Start your morning at one of São Miguel's lesser-known viewpoints. Miradouro da Vigia das Baleias das Feteiras was once used as a traditional whale watching lookout, where observers scanned the Atlantic Ocean for sperm whales before alerting the whaling boats waiting below.

Sete Cidades

Continue towards Sete Cidades, one of Portugal's most breathtaking natural landscapes and undoubtedly one of the highlights of any trip to the Azores. While most visitors simply stop at the viewpoints, we highly recommend driving down into the village itself. Here you'll experience the famous Blue and Green Lakes from a completely different perspective and discover a much quieter side of this volcanic crater. If you have a little extra time, don't miss the circular walking trail around Lagoa Verde. 

Grota do Inferno & Lagoa do Canário

Next, head to one of São Miguel's most rewarding short hikes. The trail to Grota do Inferno begins near Lagoa do Canário, a beautiful volcanic lake surrounded by dense forest. As you continue walking, the landscape gradually opens until you reach what is, in our opinion, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island. From Grota do Inferno, you'll enjoy panoramic views over several volcanic lakes, including the famous Sete Cidades, making it one of the best photography spots in São Miguel.

Ponta da Ferraria

Continue towards Ponta da Ferraria, one of the Azores' most unique natural swimming spots. Here, volcanic hot springs mix with the Atlantic Ocean, creating naturally heated seawater. The experience changes completely depending on the tide, which is why we recommend visiting during low tide, when the water feels noticeably warmer and conditions are usually safer for swimming.

Mosteiros Beach

Finish your day at Praia dos Mosteiros, one of the most beautiful black-sand beaches in the Azores. Surrounded by dramatic volcanic sea stacks rising from the Atlantic Ocean, it's one of our favorite places on São Miguel to watch the sunset. Bring a light jacket, find a quiet spot on the beach and simply enjoy the changing colors as the sun disappears behind the horizon.

Day 3 | Waterfalls, Hidden Villages & São Miguel's Untouched East

Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões

Begin the morning at one of São Miguel's most beautiful natural parks. Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões combines lush forests, historic watermills and several waterfalls connected by easy walking paths. The sound of flowing water and the vibrant greenery make it one of the island's most peaceful places to explore.

Arnel Lighthouse

Next, head to one of São Miguel's most iconic viewpoints. Perched dramatically above the Atlantic Ocean, Farol do Arnel was the first lighthouse built in the Azores and remains one of the island's most photographed landmarks. The road leading down to the lighthouse is famously one of the steepest in Portugal. Unless you're an experienced driver, we recommend leaving your car at the top and walking down to fully enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery.

Faial da Terra & Salto do Prego

Continue south towards the charming village of Faial da Terra, the starting point for one of São Miguel's most rewarding hikes. The trail to Salto do Prego Waterfall winds through forests, small streams and traditional stone paths before reaching a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. If you're visiting during the warmer months, bring your swimsuit, the natural pool at the base of the waterfall is perfect for a refreshing dip after the hike.

Povoação 

After your hike, continue to Povoação, the first settlement established on São Miguel. This peaceful seaside town is the perfect place for a relaxed lunch and a stroll through its historic center. Before leaving, stop at one of the local bakeries to try the famous Fofas da Povoação, one of the island's most traditional pastries.

Praia do Fogo

End your Azores adventure at Praia do Fogo, one of São Miguel's most unique beaches. Unlike any other beach on the island, geothermal activity naturally warms parts of the sand and seawater, creating a truly unique swimming experience. Surrounded by lush green cliffs, it's the perfect place to relax after three unforgettable days exploring São Miguel. Take one last swim, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and soak in the beauty of the island before returning to Ponta Delgada.

Return to Herdade do Ananás

Spend your final evening back at Herdade do Ananás, reflecting on three days filled with volcanic landscapes, hidden waterfalls, charming villages and unforgettable experiences across São Miguel.
