The Atlantic arrives here with almost nothing in its way, which is why the swell is so consistent and why Ericeira became a World Surfing Reserve. Beginners start on the long, forgiving beach breaks around Peniche and the Alentejo coast, anyone further along has reef and point options within a short drive, and Nazaré to watch in winter when it turns serious. Lessons and boards are arranged locally, and you stay in small hotels near the water rather than in a bunk room.
